(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 수도권매립지관리공사(이하 공사)가 지난 5일과 6일 양일간 식목일을 기념하여 산림 복원과 녹색환경 조성을 위한 나무 심기 행사를 진행했다고 밝혔다.

공사에 따르면, 공사 임직원과 대한적십자사 인천지사 소속 청소년적십자(RCY) 단원, 주민지원협의체, 주민대표운영위원 등 총 500여 명이 참여한 이번 나무 심기 행사는 현재 폐기물 매립이 진행 중인 제3-1매립장 부지에서 열렸다.

수도권매립지 온실에서 지역 주민들이 직접 재배한 약 2천 주의 소나무 묘목이 활용된 이번 행사는 초등학생부터 대학생까지 다양한 연령층의 RCY 단원들과 지역사회, 공사가 함께 협력하여 의미 있는 장이 됐다. 

특히, 행사 중에 발생하는 폐기물을 최소화하고자 다회용 컵을 제공하여 일회용품 사용을 줄이는 데 앞장섰다.

공사는 2002년도부터 수도권매립지에 나무 심기 사업을 꾸준히 이어오며, 현재까지 약 545만 그루를 식재했다. 

특히, 2006년부터 공사 임직원과 지역 주민들이 함께 식재한 벚나무들이 현재는 수려한 벚꽃길을 형성하여 지역의 벚꽃 명소로 자리를 잡고 있다. 

이에 공사는 야생화단지 개장 이후 처음으로 벚꽃축제를 개최하고, 벚꽃과 함께 봄의 정취를 만끽할 수 있도록 시민참여 프로그램을 운영할 계획이다. 

특히, 이번 벚꽃축제에서는 다회용기를 사용해 방문객들이 일회용품 사용을 줄이고 환경보전에 동참할 수 있도록 유도할 예정이다.

다만, 최근 발생한 대형 산불화재로 인한 국민 정서를 감안하여 개막식과 무대프로그램을 취소하고 행사 일자도 연기한다. 

당초 9일이었던 개막일을 14일로 연기하고 20일까지 행사를 진행한다. 

방문객과 지역주민들이 안전한 환경에서 봄을 즐길 수 있도록 지역 유관기관과 함께 다양한 체험 프로그램, 사회적기업 판매 부스 등을 운영할 예정이다. 

송병억 사장은 “20여 년간 이어온 나무 심기 사업이 결실을 맺어 이제는 지역 주민들이 그 아름다움을 가까이에서 즐길 수 있게 됐다”며, “앞으로도 지속적인 산림 복원과 탄소중립 실현을 위한 노력을 이어갈 것”이라고 말했다.
