인천시에 따르면, 인천은 대한민국을 대표하는 해양도시로, 천혜의 자연환경을 간직한 갯벌과 서해 5도를 포함한 168개의 섬을 보유하고 있어 해양 생태계의 보물창고로 불린다. 

특히 고대 환황해연안로 요충지에 자리해 해양과 내륙을 연결하며 주변 지역과 활발한 교류를 이어왔다. ‘모든 길은 인천으로 통한다(all ways INCHEON)’라는 말이 과하지 않은 이유가 바로 이것이다.

이번에 발간된 인천광역시사 제15호 ‘해양문화교류의 거점, 인천’은 해양도시 인천의 역사와 문화를 주제로 총 2권으로 구성됐으며 집필은 지리학, 수중고고학, 역사학, 민속학, 문학 등 다양한 분야의 전문가 12명이 맡았다.
