인천시교육청에 따르면, 지난해 7월 도성훈 교육감과 다니엘 위즈버그(Daniel Wiesberg) 수석부 교육감과의 협의로 성사된 이번 프로그램은 양 도시 학생들의 상호 방문으로 문화 이해와 글로벌 역량 향상을 목표로 한다.

2025년 3월에는 인천 학생 30명이 뉴욕을 방문하여(3월 17일부터 3월 29일 예정) 뉴욕의 다양한 고등학교 수업에 참여하고, 언어·문화·역사 체험, 진로 탐색 활동 등을 경험하며 7월에는 뉴욕 학생들이 인천을 방문할 예정이다.

프로그램 참여 학생들은 ‘인천 바로 알기’, ‘ 글로벌 역량 강화 교육’ 등 사전 활동을 거쳐 뉴욕 방문 시에는 현지에서 다양한 활동을 하며 글로벌 역량을 키우게 된다. 

도성훈 교육감은 “뉴욕시교육청이 직접 해외 교육청과 공동으로 학생 교류를 추진하는 것은 매우 이례적인 일이며 인천시교육청의 ‘읽걷쓰 기반 세계로교육’과 ‘인천세계로배움학교’가 높이 평가받아 이번 국제교류가 성사될 수 있었다고 생각한다”고 말했다.
