(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 2023년 4월 27일, ‘자율방범대 설치 및 운영에 관한 법률’이 시행 이전에는 임의적 자원봉사조직이었던 자율방범대는 법률 시행 이후 공식 법정단체로 인정받게 되었다. 

원칙적으로 읍‧면‧동 단위로 1개의 자율방범대 조직 구성이 가능하고, 전국적으로 많은 자율방범대가 경찰과 함께 지역 안전을 위해 협력해 나가고 있다.  

2024년 현재 기준으로 인천지역 자율방범대 조직은 인천시연합회(1), 경찰서 자율방범연합대(11), 자율방범대(153)로 구성되어 있다. 

자율방범대원은 3,200명으로, 인천광역시경찰청 소속 경찰관 6,839명과 비교하였을 때 경찰관 대비 46.7%에 해당한다. 

모든 자율방범대원들은 개인시간을 할애하여 자율방범대별 실정에 맞게 주 1회 이상 또는 주 3회 이상 동네 범죄취약 구역에서 야간 순찰을 하고 있다.  

거리에 설치된 많은 방범용CCTV와 더불어, 긴급한 범죄나 위험이 발생했을 때 즉각 대응 가능한 자율방범대가 오늘도 인천의 야간 안전 파수꾼으로서 우리동네를 순찰 중인 만큼, 그들의 노력만큼 인천시민들이 안전함을 느끼는 밤이 되길 기대해본다.
