(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 남동구가 10일, 6·25 전쟁 금화지구 전투에 참전해 공을 세운 고(故) 김창환 대위의 유족에게 화랑무공훈장을 전수했다고 밝혔다.

남동구에 따르면, 전수식에는 고인의 손자인 김태호 씨가 아들과 함께 참석해 유가족 대표로 훈장을 받았다.

1949년 1월 만 19세의 나이에 입대한 고 김창환 대위는 1951년 10월 6사단 중대본부 중사로 재임 시 6.25 전쟁 중 가장 치열했던 강원도 금화지구 전투에 참가해 조국 수호를 위해 헌신하고, 1962년 4월 육군대위로 예편했다.

훈장을 수여 받은 손자 김태호 씨는 “조국을 위해 헌신하신 할아버지의 희생을 잊지 않고 명예를 되찾게 도와주셔서 감사드린다”라고 소감을 밝혔다. 

전수식에는 남동구 이경해 보훈단체협의회장, 남동구 고대귀 기동대장도 함께 참석해 6.25 전쟁 참전용사와 유족에 대한 감사를 전했다.

박종효 구청장은 “나라를 위해 헌신하신 국가유공자들의 희생을 결코 잊지 않겠다”며 “국가유공자의 명예를 드높이기 위한 보훈 시책과 예우를 다하기 위해 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다. 

한편, 국방부와 지자체는 6.25 전쟁 당시 무공훈장 수여가 결정됐으나 훈장을 받지 못한 5만 8천여 명의 무공수훈자와 유가족에게 훈장을 전달하기 위해 2019년부터 ‘6.25전쟁 무공훈장 찾아주기 사업’을 추진하고 있다.

현재까지 3만 3천여 명의 무공수훈자를 발굴했고, 2027년까지 숨은 호국영웅을 모두 찾아 그 공적을 기릴 계획이다.

Captain Kim Chang-hwan, who enlisted in January 1949 at the age of 19, participated in the fiercest battle of the Korean War in the Geumhwa District of Gangwon Province while serving as a sergeant at the 6th Division Company Headquarters in October 1951, and devoted himself to protecting the country. He retired as an Army captain in April 1962.
