(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 손화정 인천시 영종구청장이 최근 일각에서 제기되고 있는 ‘인천국제공항 관련 공항공사 통폐합 및 기능 분산 논의’에 대해 깊은 우려와 함께 강력한 반대의 뜻을 분명히 밝혔다.

손 구청장은 7일 입장문을 통해 “인천공항은 대한민국의 관문이자 항공·물류·관광 산업과 지역경제 발전을 견인하는 국가 핵심 공공 인프라”라며 “특히 영종은 인천공항과 상생·발전을 함께 이뤄 온 운명공동체”라고 강조했다. 

이어 손 구청장은 “주민의 삶과 지역경제에 지대한 영향을 미쳐 온 인천공항이 영종과 인천, 대한민국 발전의 주춧돌이 되도록, 영종구청장으로서 통폐합에 강력히 반대한다”며 세 가지 이유를 제시했다. 

첫 번째 이유로 ‘글로벌 메가 공항’ 경쟁에서의 우위 선점을 꼽았다. 

중국 푸동공항과 일본 하네다·나리타공항이 막대한 자본으로 인천공항의 허브 지위를 위협하는 만큼, 비효율적인 통합은 고도의 전문성과 독립적 의사결정 체계를 무너뜨리고 글로벌 경쟁력을 떨어뜨릴 수 있다는 이유에서다.

둘째로는 ‘공항 경제권’의 성장 동력 상실을 지적했다. 

영종의 최우선 과제가 인천공항 주변을 바이오, 물류, 관광·레저가 결합한 ‘글로벌 공항 경제권’으로 완성하는 것인 만큼, 미래 성장 동력을 멈추는 행위는 영종뿐만 아니라 대한민국 경제 전체에 돌이킬 수 없는 손실이라고 우려를 표명했다.

마지막으로 영종구민의 희생과 기여를 강조했다. 

인천공항이 세계 최고의 허브로 성장한 배경에는 항공기 소음, 환경문제, 고도 제한 등 수많은 불편을 묵묵히 감내해 온 14만 구민들의 위대한 헌신이 있었다는 게 손 구청장의 설명이다.

이어 손 구청장은 “만약 지역적 특수성을 고려하지 않고 재정 논리로만 정책을 추진할 경우, 구민과 시민의 동의를 얻지 못한 채 커다란 갈등만을 초래할 수 있다”며 “관계 당국은 현장의 목소리와 전문가들의 의견에 귀를 기울여 국익을 위한 현명한 판단을 내려야 한다”고 촉구했다.

끝으로 손화정 구청장은 “영종구청장으로서 반대라는 분명한 입장을 다양한 경로를 통해 정부와 국회에 적극적으로 전달하고 있다”며 “영종의 주인은 구민인 만큼, 영종이 세계 최고의 항공 중심 도시로 우뚝 설 때까지 14만 구민과 함께 행동하겠다”고 밝혔다.

인천국제공항은 단순한 비행기 이착륙장이 아닙니다. 인천국제공항은 대한민국의 관문이자 국가 경쟁력의 핵심 기반 시설로서 항공 산업, 물류, 관광, 지역경제 발전을 견인하는 국가 핵심 공공 인프라입니다.

특히 영종은 인천국제공항과 함께 성장해 온 지역으로, 공항의 운영과 발전은 주민의 삶과 지역경제에 큰 영향을 미쳐 왔습니다. 공항과 지역은 상생과 발전을 함께 이루어 온 운명공동체라 할 수 있습니다.
