Adolescents Mobilized for Crime Following Drugs, Tax Evasion, and Prostitution... Two Ringleaders of 5.3 Trillion Won Gambling Site Arrested and Extradited
-Break News Incheon Park Sang-do Reporter
The pan-government joint 'Special Response Task Force on Transnational Crime' announced on the 6th that, through close cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities, they arrested two ringleaders (A and B) on-site who had organized a criminal group and operated an illegal gambling site worth 5.3 trillion won, and extradited them to Korea via Incheon Airport on the 4th.
According to the ‘Special Task Force on Transnational Crime,’ Suspect A is a figure who operated gambling sites worth 4.8 trillion won based in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, and laundered large-scale criminal proceeds. After fleeing overseas in 2014, he evaded pursuit by authorities by moving between the Philippines, Malaysia, and Cambodia, before being apprehended in the UAE and extradited after 12 years.
In addition, A is facing charges of tax evasion amounting to 66 billion won while operating illegal gambling sites, as well as drug provision and use and prostitution. He is also scheduled to be investigated regarding his connection to the death of a South Korean national in Malaysia in late 2018.
Another suspect, B, maintained a domestic organization and lured middle and high school students, who lacked financial literacy, into illegal gambling operations (known as ‘distributors’) to run a gambling site worth 500 billion won. By exploiting youth as a means of crime, B caused gambling addiction and fueled the spread of juvenile crime, thereby inducing serious social harm.
This arrest and extradition is the result of close cooperation among relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the National Intelligence Service, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, the National Police Agency, the Korea Customs Service, the National Tax Service, and the Financial Services Commission, centered around the government-wide joint "Special Response Task Force on Transnational Crime."
The Task Force tracked the suspect's whereabouts through long-term intelligence analysis and international cooperation, while continuously collecting and analyzing data regarding criminal proceeds and accomplice relationships.
Furthermore, this extradition was achieved through the persistent efforts of the Korean police and the active cooperation of the UAE authorities, even as local operations by Korean national airlines were difficult due to the recent war in the Middle East.
The UAE authorities provided full support, including devising a transfer plan utilizing local airlines, to ensure the suspect's swift and safe return to Korea.
Furthermore, considering that nearly half of the gambling crime suspects recently apprehended in Korea are adolescents and members of the 2030 generation, this case served as an opportunity to once again remind the public of the illegality and dangers of cyber gambling crimes, which are emerging as a serious social issue.
It can be considered a representative example demonstrating the government's strong determination to relentlessly pursue, apprehend, and bring criminals to justice, even if they flee overseas, as well as its capacity for international cooperation.
Meanwhile, the government plans to continue responding resolutely to transnational crimes by strengthening international cooperation—centered around the ‘Special Task Force on Transnational Crimes’—to track down and apprehend accomplices of A and B, as well as similar cyber gambling organizations that have been continuing their criminal activities while on the run overseas for extended periods, while recovering criminal proceeds and imposing strict judicial penalties.
