aT Holds Domestic Wheat Consumption and Promotion Event and Inspects Summer Cabbage Demonstration Cultivation Site in Collaboration with "Haetmiljang"
-Break News Incheon Park Sang-do Reporter
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) announced that they successfully held a domestic wheat consumption and promotion event in conjunction with the "Haetmiljang" event held at Building D of S Factory in Seongsu-dong, Seoul on the 24th.
According to aT, the "Haetmiljang" event, now in its 10th year, showcased various varieties of fresh wheat and processed products, allowing producers and consumers to directly connect and experience the excellence and utility of domestic wheat.
The event was attended by not only the general public, but also domestic wheat industry representatives and 27 companies participating in the "2025 Domestic Wheat Product Development Package Support Project." A variety of products utilizing domestic wheat, including whole wheat bread, bagel chips, noodles, traditional snacks, and alcoholic beverages, were exhibited and sampled.
Visitors tasted the products and discovered the new appeal of domestic wheat. A survey conducted alongside the event also actively expressed their willingness to purchase and suggestions for improvement, further fueling the excitement.
Meanwhile, samples of flour made from "Hwanggeumal wheat," a new variety purchased by the government for the first time this year, were provided to restaurant and bakery industry representatives, drawing significant attention. Hwanggeumal wheat, a variety patented by the Rural Development Administration in 2019, is considered suitable for baking due to its high protein content and is also considered highly versatile in the production of noodles and snacks.
Products made with Hwanggeumal wheat were tested on-site, and quality evaluations and feedback were actively exchanged. A bakery industry insider who tasted the bread commented, "The bread made with Golden Grain wheat had a firm texture and deep aroma, which was impressive."
aT Supply Director Moon In-cheol said, "Through this event, we were able to promote the practicality and diversity of domestic wheat products and create a platform for producers and consumers to connect." He added, "We will continue various campaigns and promotional activities to expand the domestic wheat consumption base."
Furthermore, the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) announced that on the 25th, it inspected a summer cabbage pilot cultivation field in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, a project being carried out in collaboration with the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHRS). This project aims to foster new climate-sensitive varieties, identify suitable cultivation sites, and facilitate procurement, manufacturing, and distribution.
According to aT, recent heat waves and other unusual weather conditions have led to a decrease in cultivation areas in the Gangwon highlands, and cabbage prices have soared to the 7,000 won range per head, raising concerns about supply and demand instability.
Accordingly, aT proactively signed a business agreement with the Korea Horticultural Research Institute in February to address climate change. The company plans to establish a stable supply and demand for cabbage by connecting the harvested volume from the pilot program to the government's market purchases and supporting kimchi manufacturing and distribution.
The Namwon City summer cabbage field inspected that day is located at a semi-altitude 470m above sea level at the foot of Jirisan Mountain. It is currently cultivating the new "Haradu" and "Taegwang" varieties.
While the highlands of Gangwon Province have been the primary producers of summer cabbage, this project has confirmed the potential for cultivation in the mountainous regions of North Jeolla Province. If this area becomes a new cultivation area, it is expected to significantly contribute to alleviating supply and demand instability.
After touring the site, aT President Hong Moon-pyo emphasized, "The Namwon demonstration cultivation field is one of six semi-alpine cultivation sites, boasting excellent irrigation facilities and high potential for development as a new hub for summer cabbage." He added, "We will strengthen our support at each stage to establish a virtuous cycle that ensures stable distribution of new cabbage varieties, such as Haradu, and expands production."
aT will purchase up to 300 tons of cabbage harvested during this demonstration project from the government, supporting participating farmers in securing markets and preserving their income. Among the purchased crop, the Haradu variety will undergo a quality assessment in collaboration with the World Institute of Kimchi.
Furthermore, aT plans to conduct kimchi manufacturing demonstrations with member companies of the Kimchi Association to assess marketability, striving to ensure a stable supply of summer cabbage.
