Yeon Jin-ah, the second offense hurts more
Han Seung-beom, director of Hallyu Research Institute
-Break News Incheon Reporter Park Sang-do

The work that has impressed me the most so far is Kyungni Park's <Land>. You don't know how many times I cried while reading the saga <Land>. If <Land> is properly translated into English, I am sure it will rank among the greatest works in the world.

The Netflix drama <The Glory> Part 2 took first place worldwide within three days of its release. It was the most eagerly awaited drama in my life, and writer Kim Eun-sook did not disappoint her expectations. The root of the Korean wave that captivates people all over the world is the story, and at the center is writer Kim Eun-sook. <The Glory> is not a drama, but it deserves to go down in history as a great work.

<Land> and <The Glory> are great because they have amazing insight into human beings. The sharp analysis and expression of human nature awakens a criminal like me and makes me a better human being.

In <The Glee>, you might think that the violence and wounds, and the psychology of the perpetrator and the victim are somewhat exaggerated and unrealistic. For example, you might think that the brutal violence inflicted by Park Yeon-jin (played by Lim Ji-yeon), the best villain in the drama, is unrealistic. And there are criticisms of how it is possible to feel no guilt about violence.

I lived in Seoul with my older brother and older sister from 4th grade. For five years, I was beaten by my brother almost every day. They were also subjected to verbal abuse and sexual abuse. The older brother who had absolute power in the family was like a god, so the child could not resist and lived in hell every day. My parents turned away from me, and no one helped.

The children's charter, "Children must be respected as human beings and properly raised as members of society," was just a piece of paper to the beaten children. The deepest wound is when my older brother stripped me of my clothes and punished me outside the house in the harsh winter. It was more frightening to see the naked girl in my class next door than the biting cold. At that time, his brother was roasting chestnuts in the kitchen with his little sister.

For me, 5 years is a lost time, so I have practically no memories other than the abuse. A few years ago, I met a friend who remembered me at the Hyehwa Elementary School reunion. When he told me that he had visited my house, I honestly told him that he had been beaten and abused by his older brother. But that friend said I was lying. How could such a caring and kind brother do that? I was shocked too much. My older brother used ruthless violence only against my family and acted like a docile sheep to others. It is a typical appearance of a corner follicle.

My brother's abuse didn't just make 5 years of hell. The trauma of abuse dominated me for decades afterward. I was always intimidated and lacked confidence. He was treated as an inferior student at school and an advisor in the army. He received psychiatric treatment for over 20 years from his 20s due to anger control disorder, depression, alcoholism, and sexual perversion. In his mid-40s, he became extremely obese, weighing over 120 kg, and suffered from all sorts of adult diseases.

In <The Glory>, Park Yeon-jin tells Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye-kyo) that she will give her one last chance at atonement. “I didn’t do anything wrong, Dong-eun! at all! Is your life hell because of me? Don't give a damn! Your life has been hell since you were born! You should shout out and thank me! Is it a sin to become a teacher thanks to me and to give you the motivation to change your mind? Forgiveness? Who is who?”

I got goosebumps at this scene. Writer Kim Eun-sook was sincere to the victims of school violence. He saw through the ugly nature of the perpetrators of violence. It tells viewers why victims are still suffering from violence that has passed decades.

In 1997, while studying abroad in Moscow, her mother called her. Saying that she bought a building in Hongje-dong for her brother, she couldn't hide her excitement, saying, "Your brother has become the owner of the building, and you are proud of your sister-in-law now!" She hung up and all night she cried. It was because if I bought a building that my family couldn't afford with bank debt, my study abroad expenses would be over. My family and I were abandoned naked in cold Moscow.

To make matters worse, the IMF financial crisis broke out a few months later, leaving Korea unable to receive even a single dollar. When I saw my son who had just turned 10, the sky was dark. All of a sudden, I became like the ‘Vietnamese boat people’. After enduring by selling all sorts of products, he continued his livelihood by working part-time as an interpreter and translator. As he risked his life to work, even the heavens were moved and he was able to earn a lot of money.

In 2000, her mother's situation worsened, and the linen store she ran was virtually ruined. I couldn't ignore the difficulties of my parents and siblings. I was a competitor, so I studied on my own for three months in Moscow to create a homepage. At the time, it launched unfamiliar online marketing and ranked first in the search for hanbok on Yahoo Korea, the largest portal site. Sales reached 100 million in October. For the next 13 years, I helped my parents earn a lot of money.

In 2008, she abandoned her position as a research professor at Hanyang University for her parents and siblings and started a hanbok rental franchise business. At this time, her wife later confessed that she was seriously thinking about divorcing me. Her wife was in charge of designing hanbok, and I was in charge of management. However, in the sense of filial piety and respect, I used my mother's hamza as the brand name. It made parents and siblings happy by making it the number one hanbok rental brand in three years. All franchisees, including the wealthy older sister, paid close to 200 million won in franchise fees. However, the franchise was given to the struggling older brother, younger sister, and parents virtually free of charge. He became a franchise owner with a monthly income of over 10 million won. He avenged his brother with virtue.

But when her business was booming, her wife told me her mother's words. She felt sorry for her eldest son who was running a franchise under her younger brother, so she decided to put me in a mental hospital by force. And he told her daughter-in-law to make her older brother the CEO. I couldn't believe it, so I checked with my mother, and she said it was because I didn't listen. I cried so much that day.

I was just a servant to make my brother shine. It's not okay if I shine. Looking back, I didn't give everything for my mother and the family because I was kind. I entered the board that my mother made for my older brother. In order not to be abandoned by her mother and to live, she pretended to be kind since childhood. It's really sad and pitiful.

The franchise business, which had been on the rise, went bankrupt a year later. I went bankrupt with over 1 billion in debt, and became a perfect beggar. At this time, the shadow of death was approaching due to all sorts of adult diseases and mental illnesses to the extremely obese man weighing more than 120 kg. I couldn't even pay my son's high school tuition. My brother and my parents, who had lived well for 13 years with my help and took care of the house, completely ignored me. I took off my clothes again.

To her mother who made her daughter quit her teaching job in <The Glory>, Moon Dong-eun said, “Thank you, Mom, nothing has changed, so stay the same.” When my mother tried to imprison me in a mental hospital, she was finally freed. The umbilical cord of my heartfelt love for my mother finally boils. I was truly grateful that I got to know my mother's real face. However, my parents and older brother did not know that I had cut the 'duck belly' too early.

In 2014, he lost 45kg in 6 months and healed all his illnesses. A completely different life began. After a year, he made a splendid comeback in a new business. After living with my parents and siblings, I bowed my head and apologized to everyone three years ago. Of course, no one asked me for forgiveness. Not long ago, for my mother who had to undergo an urgent back surgery for herniated disc, I gave her a massage secret and fixed it in 3 months. It is to do the minimum dory that has become a child.

Nevertheless, like Yeon-jin, the violence between her mother and older brother is still ongoing. This is what I say with unanimity about child violence that took my life. “I hit you because you were so damn good. You became a human because you beat him, and you became such a success thanks to him.” If that's the case, I also think "Can't I make hyung a person now?" The secondary persecution is much more painful and bitter than the original violence. It's like pouring salt into a deep wound.

Recently, my brother said that her little sister was malnourished by making her food wrong, and she was in a bad mood, so she beat me. Instead of thanking a young girl in the early 6th grade for cooking for her brother and sister for six years, he criticized them. It is not courteous for the sister who lost the time of a beautiful and shining girl by being burned in the kitchen by her mother's coercion. Hearing this, I couldn't help but laugh. When I was young, my older brother hit us when we were young for looking at us in an ugly way while drinking cola alone. However, malnutrition is a very novel excuse.

The reason why victims suddenly reveal the facts of school violence after decades is because the wounds have not healed. I can't understand it from a third party's point of view, but for the victim, every day is hell. As writer Kim Eun-sook says, a sincere apology from the perpetrator is necessary in order for the victim to regain the glory and honor lost through violence. However, if he had a personality enough to offer a sincere apology, he would not have committed such merciless violence in the first place.

Most perpetrators of violence are people with problems in the prefrontal cortex. For example, it is human nature to feel sympathy for a child who fell into a well, like Mencius' theory of good luck. People with damage to the prefrontal cortex do not have a sense of compassion. What makes humans different from animals is that the prefrontal cortex has developed. A person with this damage is in a state like a beast that has lost its 'humanity'. He lacks empathy and is a terrible egoist who only knows himself. How about giving perpetrators of domestic violence, school violence, military violence, and workplace violence a chance to recover? They have to sincerely apologize and ask for forgiveness, but in most cases, “sincerity” does not exist. ‘Once a continuation is a continuation forever’. The parable of the scorpion and the frog is a prime example. The frog, who did the favor of crossing the river carrying a scorpion on its back, is stung to death. To the frog who died together, the scorpion said, “I am a scorpion. That's my nature.”

Forgiveness is for the victim himself. You have to touch and comfort yourself who has been hurt with compassion and love. You should sing a song of comfort to yourself, “It's not your fault!” In the world, there are great people like ‘Jeong-mi’, a health teacher from <The Glory>. It is good for her to openly share her pain with someone like him and receive counseling.

And it is also a good way to reveal about the past violence and pain through a diary, social media, or a book. Oprah Winfra was raped by her cousin and uncle when she was a child and even impregnated her. Later, he mustered up his courage to publicize his shame to the world through broadcasts and books, and he healed himself and impressed many people.

The most beautiful revenge is to be happy with yourself. If you love yourself and love your neighbor, you can reach true happiness. If you have a moral superiority over the perpetrator, he will send you to hell. Nothing makes a perpetrator more miserable than seeing a happy victim. For example, if he committed violence as a child because he thought he was a fool, but later became a great person like Oprah, what would the perpetrator be? From that day on, every day will be ugly.

Writer Kim Eun-sook sings a song of consolation to victims of violence around the world through <The Glory>. Through the death of the shaman, she tells us that God leads perpetrators to misfortune. He makes the world a little more beautiful through his pen.

The same is the way I should go. I have gained considerable insight through the pain and healing of the body and mind that I have experienced over the past 50 years. For the next 50 years, I will tell the world how to heal the body and mind with a pen. That is God's order to me and my destiny.

Yeonjin-ah, can I take off this clothes and give it to you?
