(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 한국농수산식품유통공사(이하 aT)가 미국 현지 시간 26일에 뉴저지주 ‘김치의 날’ 제정 결의안(AJR200)이 뉴저지 하원 본회의를 전격 통과했다고 밝혔다.

 
공사에 따르면, 뉴저지주 김치의 날 제정을 주도한 엘렌 박 뉴저지주 하원의원은 지난해 12월 ‘김치의 날’ 제정 결의안을 발의하여, 올해 1월 19일 뉴저지주 하원 ‘농산물 및 식품안전위원회(Committee of Agriculture and Food Security)’ 청문회를 통과했다.

또, 당시 청문회에는 한국농수산식품유통공사 미주지역본부가 직접 참석해 김치의 날 제정 필요성을 설명하며 안건 통과에 힘을 실었고, 26일 뉴저지주 하원 본회의에 상정될 수 있도록 적극 지원했다.

 
11월 22일 ‘김치의 날’은 김치의 가치와 우수성을 알리기 위해 2020년 한국에서 제정된 법정 기념일로, 공사는 대 미국 김치 수출 확대를 위해 김치의 날 제정 지원에 힘써왔다.

그 결과 2021년 8월 캘리포니아주에서 최초로 김치의 날을 공식 기념일로 제정한 이래, 2022년 2월 버지니아주와 뉴욕주, 6월 수도 워싱턴D.C까지 ‘김치의 날’을 공식 기념일로 제정했다.
 

한편, 미국 내 김치의 날 제정 확산 움직임에 따라 작년 7월에는 캐롤린 멀로니(Carolyn Maloney) 연방 하원의원 주도로 연방정부 차원의 김치의 날 제정안이 하원에 발의됐으며, 이에 공사는 지난해 12월 6일 연방의회 도서관에서 최초로 김치의 날 제정을 촉구하는 홍보 행사를 열어 김치의 우수성을 널리 전했다.
