(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 최계운 인천시교육감 후보가 인천 역사상 처음으로 보수 단일화를 달성한 후, 인천의 보수세 결집을 위해 시민들과의 접촉면을 대폭 늘리고 있다.

최계운 후보는 18일 오전 출근시간대에 맞춰 동인천역 앞에서 전철을 이용하는 시민에게 명함을 돌리고 출근인사를 했다. 일부 시민은 “전폭적으로 지지할테니 반드시 이겨서 인천교육이 올바로 서게 해달라”고 당부하기도 했다.

최 후보는 이보다 하루 앞선 지난 17일에도 동암역 앞에서 출근인사를 벌였으며, 오는 19일에는 석바위시장을 돌며 시민들과 인사를 나눌 예정이다.

 
6·1 지방선거를 2주가량 남겨놓은 상황에서 최계운 후보 선거사무소는 한껏 고무된 분위기다. 지난 17일 최 후보와 같은 보수 진영에 있던 허훈 후보가 기자회견을 열고 전격 사퇴 선언과 함께 최 후보를 지지하고 나섰기 때문이다.

이날 허훈 후보는 “오랜 고심 끝에 몇 개월간 여론조사에서 저보다 앞섰던 최계운 후보가 범보수 단일후보가 되는 것이 적절하다고 판단했다”고 사퇴의 변을 밝혔다. 그는 최근까지 범보수 단일화에 합류하지 않고 독자 노선을 걸어왔다.

최계운 후보는 지난 3월에는 인천미래교육연대에서 이배영 예비후보와 합의를 거쳐 단일화를 이뤘다. 
 

이후 이달 초 ‘인천 범보수교육감 후보 단일화 추진협의회’를 통해 최계운 후보가 최종 후보로 추대돼, 경쟁을 벌였던 박승란·이대형 후보와 원팀을 선언 후 이들과 함께 선거운동을 벌여왔다.

보수진영 허훈 후보의 사퇴로 이번 인천교육감 선거는 보수진영 1명(최계운 후보)과 진보진영 2명(도성훈·서정호 후보)이 경쟁을 벌이게 됐다.

인천교육감 선거 역사상 처음으로 보수 단일후보가 된 최계운 후보는 현재 인천대 명예교수로 있으며, 과거 한국수자원공사 사장과 인천경실련 공동대표를 역임했다. 진보진영으로 꼽히는 도성훈 후보는 전교조 인천지부장 출신이며, 서정호 후보는 전 더불어민주당 인천시의원을 역임했다.

지난 2차례 인천교육감 선거에서는 보수 진영에서의 단일화 실패로 진보 성향 후보들이 연거푸 당선됐다.

2018년에는 도성훈 전 교육감이 43.7%를 득표해 56%의 표를 나눠 가진 보수 후보 2명을 누르고 당선됐다. 2014년에도 보수 후보 3명의 표가 분산되는 바람에 이청연 전  시교육감이 31%의 저조한 득표율로 당선됐다.

최계운 후보는 “이번 선거에선 인천 역사상 처음으로 보수진영에서 완전한 단일화가 이뤄졌다”며 “인천시민의 준엄한 명령을 받들어 반드시 망가진 인천교육을 정상으로 올려놓겠다”고 강조했다.
