Since last April, Incheon City has been providing free fruit snacks to students who use elementary school care classes and after-school-linked care classes.

This project started as a pilot project in 2018 to promote national health, such as improving children's eating habits, and to expand consumption of domestic fruits, and has been implemented for the fourth year this year.

In particular, the free supply of fruit snacks to elementary school care classes is being continuously promoted due to the high response from parents and students.

After prior consultations between cities, counties, districts, and related institutions such as the Office of Education, the company selection and supply methods were determined, and prior demand surveys were conducted for each school. From April 19th, the implementation started with a total project cost of KRW 754 million.

For 13,000 students in 235 elementary schools in the city, cut seasonal fruits such as apples, pears, grapes, tomatoes, strawberries, watermelons, and melons 1~3 times a week, 30 times a year or more in a cup (150g) Served in fruit form.

As for the method of providing cup fruits, among those selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, eligible companies were selected through an open call and screening process, and fruit snacks are delivered to the school before 1pm.

The supplied fruits use eco-friendly or GAP-certified domestic seasonal fruits as raw materials, and they are washed and processed in HACCP-certified facilities, and delivered to each school within 36 hours using a refrigerated car to deliver fresh and safe primary care classes to students.

Lee Dong-gi, head of the agricultural and livestock distribution department of Incheon City, said, “It is expected that it will greatly help to increase consumption of domestic fruits and improve the eating habits of elementary school students in the growing period. We will do our best to provide guidance and management so that fresh, high-quality seasonal fruits processed in safe and sanitary facilities can be supplied.”
